Honestly: Lincoln exhibit a history-making draw

How impressive was the crowd that gathered at Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library for a reception heralding the opening of “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War”?

Gov. Bill Ritter, for starters, plus Speaker of the House Terrance Carroll, City Librarian Shirley Amore and Honest Abe himself. Well, maybe not the real Abraham Lincoln, but John Voehl, whose uncanny resemblance to the nation’s 16th President makes him a popular person at historical and educational gatherings.

“There is something in his life for everyone,” explains DU history Professor Susan Schulten. “From his humble beginnings and the drive to improve himself to his complex understanding of the nation’s plight and, of course, his tremendous capacity for leadership and compassion. It’s remarkable to think he is both a heroic figure to Americans as well as someone we consider sympathetic and relevant.”

Colorado Court of Appeals Judge Russell Carparelli spoke of Lincoln’s continuing influence For three years, "Our Courts" has offered presentations, by members of the judiciary and bar, to adult audiences around the state on the workings of the Colorado judicial system. In commemoration of the Bicentennial, on March 13 Colorado Court of Appeals Judge Russell Carparelli delivered a special talk on Lincoln’s character and contributions in the conference room of the Colorado Supreme Court. He and other speakers have given the talk throughout the spring and summer to numerous groups, and will continue to do so throughout the Bicentennial observance. Scholastic Contest Gets Extra Stimulus
from Colorado Bar Association, Others

The Colorado Bar Association will sponsor the Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Contest, the Colorado Lincoln Bicentennial Commission announced on March 19. The contest will recognize elementary, middle school, high school and college students throughout Colorado on essays, creative writing, poetry and visual arts inspired by Abraham Lincoln. With the support of the CBA, EthicsGame and many individual contributors, the students participating in the Contest will be eligible for nearly $10,000 in cash awards and prizes.
