First Place Gold Medalist Soleil Worthy’s Poem
Be Like Lincoln
President Lincoln who we all know,
Was born 200 years ago.
I really want to commemorate him,
For living was much harder back then.
He spent all day doing chores,
He had a break and then did more.
He did his reading by candlelight,
Oh my goodness, what a sight.
He did everything it took,
To keep the Union in one book.
To save the wonderful U.S.A.,
Without him I wouldn’t be here today.
Lincoln ended slavery,
And he is a hero to me.
My dad is black, my mom is white,
They are such a beautiful sight.
Without him, would I have been born?
Would my dad harvest tobacco and com?
Would I have a history?
Well, that is a mystery.
So I will try my very best,
To separate good out from the rest.
And if I do some real deep thinking,
I might end up being like Lincoln.
Lincoln believed in many things,
It’s as clear as the sound of a bell when it rings.
Here are some things that he believed,
Would make us better, you and me.
Trying hard to make your self better,
Sending your good friend a letter.
Trying not to act so sick,
Self improvement, that’s the trick.
Working hard, living large,
Always getting to take charge.
Not letting your brain turn into putty,
All it takes is life-long study.
Self improvement, decency,
And a belief in liberty.
Life-long study and hard work
Trying not to be a jerk.
Then if everybody tries,
To put some Lincoln in their lives.
Society might be better yet,
And Lincoln would be part of it.
